Picket Post House

Map

Just west of scenic Pinal Mountains is a 4400 foot butte originally named “Tordillo Mountain” by the Spanish.  The soldiers renamed it “Picket Post” when they began using it as a sentinel point to guard the settlement.  The mountain held a heliograph station and played a prominent role in the Apache wars.

It was at this location the Col. Boyce Thompson began construction of his 7021 Square foot mansion in 1923 that was completed in 1928.  It is situated above the Queen Creek and overlooks his namesake, Boyce Thompson Southwest Arboretum.  South facing windows reveal Picket Post Mountain while the view to the east offers majestic sunsets against the beautiful Apache Leap escarpment.  To the north are magnificent views of the 6058 foot Iron Mountain and to the west a short drive to Weavers Needle and the beautiful Superstition Mountains.
