Superior Today

Superior is located 63 miles east of Phoenix on US Highway 60 at the junction of Highway 177.  The town is in a mountainous setting at an elevation of 2882 feet and is surrounded by beautiful scenery.  It is approximately 5 degrees cooler during the day and 5 to 20 degrees cooler at night and receives about 10 inches more rain annually than the Phoenix Valley.

In 1902, George Lobb laid out the town and named it Hastings after a local mine.  Lobb sold his mining interests to Lake Superior and Arizona Mining Company and changed the name to Superior.  The Magma Copper Company was established in 1910 which became a huge copper producer.  A smelter was built in 1924 and remained in operation for 47 years.  Superior was incorporated in 1976.

Some of the scenic attractions in the area of Superior are the Pinal Mountains to the east of town on Highway 60 which includes beautiful Queen Creek Canyon and the Queen Creek Bridge and Tunnel.  On the western edge of Pinal Mountains, on the eastern edge of Superior, is Apache Leap Mountain with vertical cliffs streaked with red.  Just east of Apache Leap is the Oak Flat Campground which provides a great setting for campers, hikers and is the location of the international bouldering contest held each April.  West of Superior is Picket Post Mountain, Picket Post House and Boyce Thompson Arboretum and north is Iron Mountain.

Superior has a population of approximately 3200 people, primary middle school (K-06), a new Junior/Senior School (07-12), a new state of the art swimming pool, paramedics and a 3000 foot runway (unpaved) airport.
