Dia de Colores Art Festival
The 12th Annual Dia de Colores Art Festival and Vintage Car Show coming Oct, 2013.
The following information is about the 2012 event.
PLEIN AIR PAINTERS
Superior, AZ has vintage mining town architecture and dramatic natural features like Apache Leap rising 1,000 vertical feet to form a striking backdrop that wraps around the east edge of town. Plein air painters are invited to help capture Superior scenes on Oct. 20 during the annual Dia De Colores in this community located about 45-minutes' drive due East of Mesa on Highway 60. Arizona Plein Air Painters association members have a group outing planned; Gold Canyon professional artist Burdell Moody will offer an informal lecture about plein air - and demonstrate technique. Event chairman Lynn Heglie (owner of Porter's Cafe) invites artists to call 520-827-9398 for details about this event featuring a chance to tour an eclectic mix of art studios around Superior from 9 am-4 pm (a morning car show and live music, too).
$10 tickets for the self-guided tour benefit the local chamber of commerce, funding this and similar events. Among the half-dozen studios featured will be Chuck Davison, whose vivid rustic murals are landmarks of downtown Superior. Stone sculptor Tommy Macias, painter Bernie Neinaber and Marilee Lasch will also open their homes to visitors for the day. Don't miss a rare chance to meet ceramic artist Terry Stone and buy unique artworks at his singular home-studio. He might even be sharing some of his home-made chicory with guests.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST, CAR SHOW, LIVE MUSIC, MEET-THE-ARTISTS RECEPTION
The day begins with an 8-10am hearty pancake breakfast fundraiser at Porter's Cafe sponsored by the local Soroptimists association, which raises money for youth activities in Superior. Classic cars, lowriders and more will provide ample photo-ops parked along Main Street from 8am-2pm. There's live music at Porter's Cafe from Chuck Wagon & The Wheels from 11am-2pm, and a meet-the-artists reception there from 4-6pm.
