Superior celebrates the
3rd Annual Prickly Pear Festival

On Aug. 23 (2014) the historic copper mining town of Superior hosts its 3rd Annual Prickly Pear Festival; a culinary celebration of cactus cuisine that opens with a guided hike in the desert, a pancake breakfast (complete with prickly pear syrup, of course!); and Jean Groen's popular class teaching “how to pick and juice ‘em” taught by Jean and her prickly pear pickin' accomplice Robert Lewis.

Superior: Arizona's Prickly Pear Capital This festival evolved from the popular series of prickly pear classes that author Jean Groen teaches at nearby Boyce Thompson Arboretum, the famous botanical garden just west of downtown Superior, known for Summertime weekend nature walks and specialty workshops.  “At least 1,500 people have attended our cactus classes over the past five years,” said Groen, “these classes really struck a chord – each year the attendance increases, so having a prickly pear festival in Superior will be a great way to expand, allowing more people to attend, and to experience a wider variety of cactus cuisine”.

Superior Chamber of Commerce event planners keep some elements of the festival, such as Groen’s popular class, free, encouraging families to attend and learn together.

More information will be posted as the event approaches.
